Augustine's 10 - 23 August @ 16.50
One for the musical theatre historians… This early Kurt Weill/Ogden Nash piece is rarely performed and is indeed fraught with staging challenges – a statue of Venus that comes to life and causes havoc for a barber, a millionaire art lover and various other characters.
The score boasts some notable songs such as ‘Speak Low’ and ‘I’m a Stranger Here Myself’. Metal Monkey deserve congratulations on their choice of show – it shows ambition to stretch their talents and to take their audience with them into less familiar works.
Lovely singing from Chrissy Quinn as Venus and Michael Trakas as Rodney, supported by a competent 3-piece band. A more abstract approach to the direction would help to reflect the magical quality suggested by the plot and music rather than the somewhat literal interpretation by the company of twelve.
