C eca 13 - 29 August @ 18.50 Durham Fringe Productions
With so much to choose from at the Fringe, stumbling across a gem is a rare occurrence. Step forward the superb cast and musicians of ‘Hot Mikado’. Performing this Bell and Bowman reworking of the Gilbert and Sullivan original, Durham Student Theatre will have you lindy hopping in your seat and, probably, making strong resolutions to go to the theatre more often. The highly talented cast perform with gusto this demanding and mile a minute musical. Director and choreographer Maddy Mutch has captured perfectly just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek to make this a kimono-wearing winner of a night out. Ok, so the American accents weren’t quite as sustained as they could have been, and the lyrics to the songs were often difficult to make out, but it didn’t matter as I was firmly transfixed. Just as well, or else I might have made a right Nanki-Poo of myself by dancing in the aisle.
