From The Fire

Zoo Roxy    17 - 20 August @ 10.30   Triangle Productions

This show begins with documentary footage concerning a fire in a garment factory in India in December 2010. We are then taken back to 1911 New York to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory and meet the predominantly female workforce just before a devastating fire rips through the building.

This is a powerful story – a story 100 years old that is still being written in other factories all over the world.

The rich socio-political backdrop is more than matched by the cast of 14 remarkable singers and superb live band in Elizabeth Swados’s sublime score.

Staging is simple yet effective: a superb example of how to use limited resources to their maximum effect, in keeping with the subject matter of the show.

Cecilia Rubino directs her cast with an assurance that borders perfection: the pace of her book and the invitation to the audience to THINK about what has happened and is happening, particularly to women in the poorest working conditions is nothing short of rousing.

It takes something special to bring an audience to its feet roaring approval at only 11:30 am in Edinburgh: From the Fire achieves it – go catch it before it moves on to greater things.
