C soco 9 - 29 August @ 15.35 Action to the Word in association with C theatre
Entering an attic area with actors in place and ethereal lighting gives this show a haunting opening which continues throughout. Constance and Sinestra are two young girls who are alone in the world after the death of their mother. Their father is a taxidermist who has gone mad and lives below, never venturing to spend time with them. Their mother bizarrely preserved by their father, looks after them through song with desperate need to take care and warn them of the outside world. Constance is the sensible one, craving love from her father or anyone - enter a young boy Hereford who is also an abandoned child. He manages to secure an apprenticeship with the father and falls in love with Sinestra. Unfortunately, Constance has fallen in love with him. Suddenly into this mix appear a couple who are a cross between Mrs Lovat in Sweeny and the child catcher in Chitty! Unable to have children of her own, she kills children and soon has captured the two girls. Finally saved from their clutches, the girls return home and Hereford is rejected in a cruel and dark finale – the sisters reunited and the mother watches. An interesting piece of theatre with a strong ensemble of actor/musicians. Original music and songs all help to create the intriguing atmosphere where nobody knows what will unfold next. Some work on this production could create a new musical which whilst dark, is captivating in many ways.
